10 dogs were supposed to be in a "luxury hotel", but it turned out not to be a luxury hotel and the dogs ended up dead.
The episode took place last Saturday in Utrecht (Netherlands). The local police found 13 dogs at the Hondenhuys hotel in Woudenberg.
But the dogs were not in luxurious conditions: they were inside a shipping container. Without proper ventilation and most of them in very poor condition.
The police took 11 of the dogs to the vet, but only one survived.
A source explained to dutch news that, due to poor ventilation, the dogs died from lack of oxygen.
A spokesman for the Central Holland police admitted that this case "is very tragic".
The owner of the space said he was "deeply affected" by what had happened.
The Hondenhuys hotel advertises that dogs - who spend a few days or weeks there while their human companions are on vacation - can watch TV, in a dogflix 'n chill moment. Dogs can also listen to music, take a nap in air-conditioned apartments and there are "beautiful sun loungers and rugs for guests". Dogs can "even choose their own toys".
What's more, according to the hotel's advertisements, dog owners are always informed about the well-being of their animals during their vacation.
One of the dog owners didn't want to comment "hotly". Because there is a lot of sadness and "anger".
It's not yet known what happened. An investigation is underway; the police will carry out an autopsy on one of the dogs later this week to determine the cause of death.
