A driver of a light vehicle died on Saturday when he crashed into a gate on the outer perimeter of the White House complex in Washington, and the incident is being investigated as a traffic accident, local police said.

US President Joe Biden was spending the weekend in the state of Delaware, and the secret services have indicated that there was no threat to the White House and that there was no implication or threat to public safety.

However, they will continue to investigate the incident, according to the Associated Press.

The driver, who was not immediately identified, was found dead in the vehicle after the incident, shortly before 22:30 on Saturday (03:30 on Sunday in Lisbon), according to a statement from the secret service, which said it had activated security protocols. Police officers tried to help the driver immediately after the accident.

The Metropolitan Police Department reported that the vehicle collided with a security barrier at the intersection of 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington.

As The Guardian recalls, this is the second time in 2024 that such an incident has happened.

In January, another car crashed into a White House gate. The driver, who survived, was arrested - he is suspected of having mental problems.

A few weeks earlier, a driver drove his car into President Joe Biden's motorcade. He was charged with drunk driving.
