If you think a dog-only airline is a crazy idea, that's because you've never had to fly in a bag, says Bark Air.
The new company specializing in dog travel, which will allow its canine passengers to sit in the seats and move around the cabin, is making its maiden voyage this Thursday - between New York and Los Angeles.
According to IFL Science, the first flight of the new company, which was created to minimize the anguish felt by pets when traveling by plane, is already completely sold out: its ten tickets are all occupied by dogs traveling the world with their owners.
"Too often, dogs are prevented from traveling, confined to a travel bag, and have to endure the stress of flying," the company said in a statement.
The airline claims that its canine passengers will be spared the stress of queuing at security, instead being fast-tracked through a screening process that takes just "minutes".
"The world's first air travel experience designed specifically for dogs first and their human companions second, allowing them to travel together comfortably and conveniently."
Before boarding, a "highly specialized" team will attend to each dog to help them adapt to their experience through socialization and cabin preparation.
Calming pheromones, music and colors will also be used to ensure that all four-legged passengers are relaxed when they board the plane, while noise-canceling earplugs and "calming jackets" will be available if necessary.
Once on board, dogs will have to be on a leash during cab, take-off and landing, but will be free to move around the cabin.
The company also advises human passengers against clapping when the plane lands, as this can be disturbing for dogs, so the captain will have to do without a round of clapping.
The airline is currently operating flights from New York to Los Angeles and London, with more destinations expected to be added soon.
