French company Seabike has announced the launch of a new underwater mobility device that promises to propel users through the water at unprecedented speeds, using the power of their own legs.

This new invention, which resembles an underwater unicycle, is essentially a crank-driven propeller designed to enhance the swimming experience by harnessing human kinetic energy.

The Seabike device works by extending a pole to a suitable length and attaching it to the user's waist via a belt. Once attached, the user finds the pedals with their feet and starts turning the crank against the resistance provided by the waist belt.

This action powers a propeller of around 38 centimeters, allowing the swimmer to glide through the water effortlessly. The device offers versatility in use; swimmers can use their arms to increase speed, or adopt a more relaxed pose by extending their arms like Superman.

More adventurous users can dive underwater, effectively imitating a pedal-powered fish. The Seabike is also SCUBA-compatible for those who want to explore deeper waters without trying too hard, explains New Atlas.

Interestingly, the propeller can be inverted to allow propulsion with the arm, which increases the flexibility of the device, although this mode seems to be less captivating.

Recognizing the practicalities of using it in swimming pools, Seabike has designed the propeller to rotate at a speed that is safe for local pools, although it may attract prying eyes from traditional swimmers. What's more, its buoyant nature ensures that it remains accessible on the surface of the water, even if it accidentally comes loose.

‘Underwater bicycle’ propels swimmers forward at superhuman speed
French company Seabike has developed a swimming device that uses your own leg power to accelerate you through the water at superhuman speeds. This crank-driven pusher prop looks a bit like an underwater unicycle... We’d love to take one for a spin!

The Seabike is not just a leisure device, but a practical tool for exploring open waters. The company organizes snorkeling excursions in Cannes and offers the device along with snorkeling boards and spearfishing kits. To facilitate transportation and storage, the Seabike can be packed compactly.

The device also does not include any electronic components. The product has been on the market for about a year, with prices starting at 290 euros.
