This ambitious initiative dates back to Microsoft 's initial investment of 1 billion dollars in OpenAI in 2019. Recognizing the role of supercomputing systems in driving AI research, Microsoft quickly developed a custom supercomputer housed in its data centers in Iowa.

Now, as reported by The Information, OpenAI and Microsoft are preparing to embark on an even bigger project: a $100 billion data center venture housing a supercomputer equipped with "millions of specialized server chips".

Codenamed "Stargate", this monumental undertaking could begin as early as 2028, with plans to expand over two years and a potential energy consumption of up to 5 gigawatts, surpassing the capacity of even the largest nuclear power plants.According to Freethink, Microsoft and OpenAI are still pondering the location, hardware components and power sources. It should be noted that a smaller supercomputer project is also being considered for OpenAI in Wisconsin, with an estimated cost of up to 10 billion dollars and an expected launch in 2026.
