The Portuguese authorities are warning of fraud taking place on WhatsApp, following the popularity and global reach of the social network TikTok.
The method used by these digital criminals begins with sending unsolicited messages via WhatsApp.
These messages are designed to look like legitimate invitations to recruit workers for TikTok, promising recipients payments in exchange for interacting with certain accounts on the platform - by liking, commenting and following them.
The promises of compensation can amount to several hundred euros a day, points out Morning Post.. However, the authorities warn that the scheme is fraudulent and is an attempt to obtain victims' banking information.
The authorities strongly recommend that consumers not only ignore such solicitations, but also leave any groups to which they may have been added as part of this scam.
Victims should also complain to the authorities and remain skeptical when offers seem too good to be true, especially if they come from unknown contacts.
No details have yet been released about the number of consumers affected by this scam or any related arrests.
It should be remembered that WhatsApp scams have become more frequent in recent years. In 2023, the "hello, dad" or "hello, mom" scam, in which fraudsters pose as the victims' children and ask for money transfers, defrauded the Portuguese of more than four million euros.
